although our collection of art medals
is mainly about Dutch medals made in the 20th Century,
we, once in a while, can not resist to buy a foreign medal, because it is just beautiful, like this one:
a rare, silver medal, designed in 1914, by:
Richard Adolf Zutt
born 1887 in Basel and died 1938 in Suez
we see a kneeling, winged female figure protecting three children,
with above her right shoulder the lettering:
OPUS ZUTT,
on the reverse the crown of Saint Stephen, the Hungarian coat of arms, with three angels' heads above and two torches facing downwards to the sides
with the Hungarian text:
Nem Hagylak Titeket Arvakul Eljo Vok Ti Hozzatok Janos XIV
for:
I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you,
a biblical text from John 14:18
and
A Hadsegelyezo Hivatal az Arvaknak 1915,
for:
the Military refief Office for Orphans
and
A.1914D, for Anno Domino, the year 1914,
diameter circa 68,5mm
In the Hungarian National Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, MNG you can find a bronze one with inventory number 55.1190.P
